Dear Parents and Youth of the Castle Pines Ward,

This summer looks to be as worthwhile, exciting, and busy as ever.  We have Youth Conference, Girl’s Camp, and Boy Scout Camp quickly approaching.  We would urge all the youth in our ward to do whatever they can to make these activities an integral part of their summer plans.  We are desperately trying to keep the costs as low as possible and are working on a fund raising activity to defray the costs for both Girl’s Camp and Scout Camp.  We know that these activities can be a financial burden on many families and so we would encourage the youth to try and earn as much money on their own as possible.  We certainly do not want someone who wants to attend one of these activities to not attend because of the cost.  Please contact your priesthood leaders if any of these youth activities places a financial burden on your family and we will do whatever we can to help.

Girl’s camp is the week of June 17.  Sister Rawlings has informed us that the cost for Girl’s Camp is $70 for all girls except 4th years. The cost for 4th year girls is $25.  Boy Scout Camp is June 18 to June 23.  Brother Houser has said that the cost for each boy is $250.  Again, we are trying to plan a fund raising activity that will help defray the costs for these two excellent activities.

As you have probably already heard, the Stake Presidency has given us permission to have our Ward Youth Conference at Temple Square.  Just like Girl’s Camp and Scout Camp, much preparation and planning has gone into this great activity.  We have met several times with the Youth Conference committee and have lowered the costs as much as possible. The original cost looked to be around $75 per person.  We now have the cost down to $40.  This includes transportation, lodging, several meals, and the cost of the actual conference.  Each person will be responsible for the cost of their meals while traveling to and from youth conference.  We will be departing the morning of June 4th and returning the afternoon of June 7th.  During our time in Salt Lake City, we will be staying at the Residence Inn by Marriott. The hotel has a pool, so bring a modest swimsuit. Each hotel room has a full kitchen.  A brief tentative daily schedule follows:
Monday: Drive to SLC with a pool party and barbeque at night (time permitting).
Tuesday: Short hike to “This is the Place” monument in the morning.  2pm Youth Conference check in.
Wednesday:  Youth Conference.
Thursday: Return home around 5pm.
We will provide you with the actual youth conference agenda and the dress standards in the very near future.

As a Bishopric we support all of these summer activities and feel strongly that they will provide many “testimony strengthening” opportunities.  May the Lord continue to bless you and your families.

Sincerely,

Bishop Thorderson

This weekend we will be backpacking up in the lost creek wilderness area which is one of my favorite areas.  We will meet at King Soopers at 4:30 leaving promptly.   We will drive to the goose creek trail head which is only about 52 miles away but with the last 20 miles on the dirt it takes a while.  I currently plan to hike in about 5 miles and it will be dark when we get there.  I am hoping for some great star watching,  swimming (wading?), sight seeing, capture the flag, evening campfire,  desert, skills building.  We will be eating sack Dinner on the way to the trailhead-  bring a sac lunch.  You need to pack light and have some very comfortable shoes.  DO NOT BRING EXTRAS OR CAMP COMFORTS in your pack or you’ll wish after a few miles that you hadn’t.  LIGHT AND FAST is the key here.  Be prepared but dump out any extra weight.  We hope to be back by 5 or 6 Saturday.  The last campout was in preparation for this one because Lost Creek is amazing!  Also we will be covering almost twice the ground.

Here are someone’s photos of the area:  http://www.aroundcolorado.com/trip_reports/2004_0612_LostCreek/photo_01.html

Scouting Update 4-1-12 Update

Scouters,We had a fantastic campout last weekend backpacking.  Those that went passed off the remainder of the camping merit badge with the exception of the 20 nights camping in the field.  I’ll post some photos soon.  It was probably one of my favorite campouts so far.A big thanks to bro Jones and bro Orgill for helping out.  Also to bro Buckwalter even though he killed us in hacky sac!

I need to get us signed up for scout camp merit badges in the next day or so.  I would like to keep us as much together as possible because its way more fun that way.  If you haven’t taken environmental science yet you will be taking that.  Sam is the only one that I have heard from so far (thanks sister walker for being on the ball).  Everyone email me today or tomorrow if possible.
It’s $250 made payable to the ward under scouts on the tithing envelope.  If you have already paid some just deduct it off the 250.
Fathers let me know ASAP on which days and times you can help out at camp. First come first serve.  No fathers=No summer camp.

This week we are meeting at the walkers to play ball and eat something.  7 PM I think.

Next campout is May 11-12- backpacking in the lost creek wilderness area.  This is one of my favorite areas and I have been going here since I was a deacon.  It is fairly rigorous with a 5 mile hike in.  We will want to travel “light and fast”.

Thanks javan

Here are all my photos from the last campout:
